Re: MY1977 Contis and TCs: What Speedo do you have?

Heres a photo of the km speedo in my project car, a '70 Continental Coupé: http://s3.postimage.org/2qgcey4uc/006.jpg As you can just about see, its marked up to 200 in km's only. Is that rare, unusual, or neither? Uncle Joe, how's that '70 Coupe coming along? IMHO, one of the prettiest and most un...

Re: coil and ballast resistor

It will be the Ignitor II that I get, probably together with one of their cóils to match. That will be easiest for me.

Re: coil and ballast resistor

I'm leaning towards the Pertronix, but theres just one single thing puts me off it. Its this thing with the ballast resistor. according to one set of installation instructions, it shouldn't be fitted. According to another, it should. Is there that much of a difference between (for example) Ignitor a...

Re: coil and ballast resistor

Thanks to all of your replies, I have found out the answer. It was simply so that I was looking in the wrong place for the resistor, which I have now located. A red/green wire leaves the coil. This arrives at a connector on the dash panel, and from there goes to the connector to the ignition switch....

coil and ballast resistor

The coil that is fitted to my '70 Continental has started to leak oil from where the ignition lead plugs into it. According to the printed text on it (not a decal) it should only be used with a ballast resistor. According to the wiring diagram, no ballast resistor was fitted in 1970. I cant find one...

Re: If you have any idea let me know please

I had a look at the exhaust on mine last night to confirm this before posting. The flanges on the pipe are loose. So to fit them onto the driver side is no problem, as its just a matter of orienting them. On the passenger side, its a matter of either modifying the pipe (as Mechatech on here did with...

Re: 1970 Mercury Marquis: Complete Restoration

Having said that, a universal joint cannot survive if it works at a zero angle, it has to work within certain angle tolerances. WhatchootalkinaboutWillis? A u-joint operating at zero angle has no angle about the rotational axis. The u-joint is effectively out of the picture and just transferring pu...

Re: 1970 Mercury Marquis: Complete Restoration

Of course a drive axle has to be balanced, but that doesn't compensate for the vibration caused by a universal joint. quite often, they will be balanced in a straight line Even if the transmission yoke revolves at a constant speed, the rotational speed of the drive shaft itself varies. This causes a...

Re: 1970 Mercury Marquis: Complete Restoration

When I first read that question, my initial thought was no. Then I started to reason about it, comparing the Mercury to my Coupé. The wheelbase on mine is 127". According to what I have read, the Mercury's is 124". Assuming the information to be correct, and that the engine/transmission o...

Re: '70 Continental Coupé project

Its been a while since I have done an update on progress, mainly because I dont do much on cars during the summer! As some of us are aware, the plastic bases to the armrests are prone to cracking. Mine are no exception, so I've fabricated new ons in sheet steel. I'm not 100% happy with the way that ...

Re: 1970 Mercury Marquis: Complete Restoration

I saw this topic for the first time last night, managed to read through it today, and have already forgotten some stuff! Even so, if I may, a few comments, and a question. Regarding the transmission. At first glance, fitting an E4OD (rather than the AOD) seems easy. It does require a lot of work tho...

An update on this. The vendor did indeed respond to my pm, and the matter has now been resolved to my complete satisfaction, without the need for multiple messages discussing the problem.
