1971 Mark III Receiver Drier Accumulator R&R

Original (?) York compressor started knocking. Ordered replacement and turned over to local shop to evacuate the R12 and convert to 134a. Shop wants to replace receiver/drier, but I can't find one - the original has an integrated line from the drier to the compressor, all one piece. Hoping to keep s...

Re: New tank or retro fit with pump

I am adding EFI to my 71 Mark III w/ 460. The tank in the 71 is upright between the back seat and trunk. I want to source a brand new tank and fab an in-tank pump. I have yet to find a practical/affordable 60psi external pump that doesn't sound like an electric shaver over the whisper quiet of my Ma...

$500 is totally fair for correct job.

This will be $1000 in no time at all.

Re: Runaway heat, hard starting, rough idle and etc

Argh. Drained the petcock of water. Poured 1 gallon straight coolant in - THAT filled the rad to 2” from top...hmm, that would mean 12 qts/3 gallons water remainining in the block?? Huh? Reinstalled 180 deg motorad brand thermostat (checked operation in boiling water - opened and closed fine) Drove ...

Re: Runaway heat, hard starting, rough idle and etc

So...hoping I can bring this thread to a close. * Looking again at the shop manual - I bent the accel pump linkage and moved the pin so as to draw as quick & healthy a squirt as possible out of both nozzles. Huge difference, much better throttle response off idle. * I adjusted idle, timing and i...

Re: Runaway heat, hard starting, rough idle and etc

Reassembled, without the thermostat. Drove for :30 today, gauge crept past halfway but during 30-40 mph cruise and idle mostly stayed below halfway. Car still hesitates/stumbles at tip in, much less noticeable when hot but terrible when cold. Choke is adjusted properly (?) mostly closed when cold, f...

Re: Runaway heat, hard starting, rough idle and etc

Update: I have not yet tackled drain plug/flush. Still on the radiator and now water pump rabbit hole. TDC is accurate: #1 at top of stroke 10 deg before (rising) and 10 deg after (falling) by the feel of the socket extension I'm holding in the plug hole, against the top of the piston. Autolite 4300...

Re: Runaway heat, hard starting, rough idle and etc

Hi folks - thanks again for all the quick replies and help. Did I mention the car has 100K on it, I bought it with 84K from orig fam and I could tell it was definitely well maintained but it also sat a lot (indoors). @Tonyc: No, I never pulled the freeze plugs out of the block. Per earlier posts, wi...

Re: Pertronix ignition

A little late to the party but this is by far the best upgrade anyone can do to their 60s/70s cars. Affordable, totally reliable, takes 20 mins to install, if that, can't tell from stock and once done you will forget it's even in there.

Worked great in my 66 and my 71s.

Re: Runaway heat, hard starting, rough idle and etc

Mike: YES, with rad cap off and engine operating temp, water level dips then rises right back up to top after throttle. Action TonyC: I cranked timing all the way to 12 where I heard slight ping on accel under load then backed off again to 10. Car has been at 10 BTDC since forever, no issues... And:...

Re: Runaway heat, hard starting, rough idle and etc

Thanks much, Action. Thermo function explanation much appreciated, that makes sense. Sorry - I meant to type temp diff between rad hoses is indeed 20 degrees, not 2. And exh ports - pass side is discolored as you can see, but driver side - much less so. Thought it might mean something. Vac is 18, st...

Runaway heat, hard starting, rough idle and etc

71 460 was running fine when pass exh manifold finally cracked, see other post if you really want to :). Also - temp gauge consistently ran dead center, but this spring it would sometimes creep JUST A SMIDGE to the right of center, but that's all, ever. Anyhoo - I snapped 3 bolts removing the exh ma...

Re: Engine Still Stalling!

Does it sputter before slow shut down? That would indicate fuel problem to me. Is your tank venting properly? Correct gas cap? Loosen and and retry?

Does it die without any sputter or drama? That would hint to me electrical prob - wire heating up/shorting. That's a fun one.

Re: Mark III Exhaust Manifold

OK. Car all back together and runs like it should. Thanks for all the help. 2 things left to do: 1. Go to the AC shop to have them bring the R12 back on line - after isolating the sys / removing the compressor it burped a LOT of oil up and out all over the garage floor AFTER I carefully took it out ...
