Re: Car stalls on steep hills or hard braking in reverse

Going up hill. Idle speed is factory around 600 rpm. If I can keep moving at speed I can make it but if I slow or stop on the hill I stall. Roll back down to a level surface and after some cranking I can start again. Accelerating hard, hard turning, and hard braking when moving forward causes no iss...

Car stalls on steep hills or hard braking in reverse

My car will sputter and stall on a very steep hill unless I apply throttle enough to maintain speed of at least 15 mph. If I drive high speed in reverse and hit the brakes I get the same result. Basically if the fuel has to move forward towards the engine against gravity or inertia it stalls. Tank w...

The bore for both 429 & 460 is 4.360"

The stroke for the 429 is 3.59"

Does that mean a crankshaft change would convert one engine to the other?

Re: Anyone with a 70s era Lincoln

I just realized this is the wrong board. Dan, can you move it to the engine board.

I think all Lincolns by 72 had ATC AC as standard. True the 429 wasn't in the Lincoln but its the same engine except for bore. No cooling problems just striving for accuracy.

Anyone with a 70s era Lincoln

Can anyone tell me how many blades their engine fan has.

I currently have a 7 blade fan, but my service manual has a picture of a 429 with a 5 blade fan. The 7 is about an inch small in diameter than the 5, yet I have no overheat issues.

Re: Why is it always the LAST bolt?

I find that's it's always the last bolt that gives the most trouble, coming off or going on. It either breaks, strips or is seized. Doesn't matter if it's 2 or 2000. One will always be a bastard. :smt013 Another gripe is the workbench bounce. If I drop a fastener at my workbench it will always bounc...

Re: Grille Badge on 69 Mark III

How does the badge mount? If its studs and nuts with washers then try a piece of foam rubber sheet either on back of the badge or on the washers. Snug it down enough to grab.

Re: New member, just got a 72

I'm running a 2.75 and I have no complaints. Don't play with the engine too much either. I did and in hindsight I don't think I gained too much for my efforts. Do, if you get the chance, change out the timing gears. They are plastic coated and cause trouble when the plastic sheds. In 72 they retarde...

Re: 1972 Mark IV electrical and vacuum

Number one may be your throttle solenoid. When activated it would hold the throttle open slightly to allow the car to idle better especially under a load like the a/c. When off it would let the throttle plates snap completely shut to prevent dieseling on shutdown. Number four is a fuel vapor collect...

Re: Opinion wanted

Thanks LCont72. Addressing some of your points. The owner said he still had the cracked intake manifold but I didn't bother to look at the time. Maybe it started to leak from poor sealing and someone torqued it down cracking it. One exhaust manifold is cracked as I could see the patch and the crack ...

Re: 1972 exhaust manifold

I would replace both. The driver's side may be good now but it may crack in the future, mine did. Long story short, my passenger side was already a 75 when I bought the car so I got a free pass but for the drivers side I had to get the pipe from the manifold to the H pipe reworked. Any good muffler ...

Re: Opinion wanted

No word yet. I guess I'm too low. I told him nice car and I would give him near asking price but with that engine I don't want to risk more.

Re: 1972 exhaust manifold

My driver's side was cracked. I replaced both from a 75. They cast on ribs as reinforcement after 73 or 74. You will have to alter your exhaust pipes to fit. $350 is a bit steep. I think I paid $75 for mine but the shipping was murder, about $200 total in the end. http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/...

Re: Opinion wanted

Some thing I noticed about Cadillacs so far. Can't find a forum as well laid out as this one. Can't seem to find a good parts network like there is for Lincoln. Vintage Cadillac parts seem to be expensive compared to Lincoln. Having said that I made an offer of $5500US and left it at that. Ball's in...

Re: Opinion wanted

Why start out with an undiagnosed and potentially very expensive problem for a just average condition car? Since you asked for opinions, mine is to let this one go and if you want a Caddy, there's a lot of them out there! My problem is geography. On the mainland you can drive a few hours and ...
