Re: Mystery Items

Yes, it does show no soft spacers at all; so that's a non-issue in your case. Gearbox looks a bit leaky, though.

Re: brake fluid compatibility

On YouTube, there’s a channel called Just Rolled In and it is filled with crazy DIY repairs that are things like spray foam for frame repair, rubber tubing for brake lines, and tie-wraps for ball joints. Oh, yes, I know that series all too well! People complain about shady mechanics all the time; t...

Re: 65 Gas Tank Removal

Something else I thought of regarding those lifts: They have pretty wide platforms, the idea being to reduce the risk of driving off the lift in a way other than the correct way. The wider the platforms, the less service can be done, especially a job like removing a tank. No, the best deal is to get...

Re: brake fluid compatibility

No, nor do I. If there were, it would be held exclusively by brake-hose manufacturers, not available to just anybody.

Re: Vacuum hose issues

If he has the diagrams, then I'm guessing he isn't studying them thoroughly enough. If the system worked before the surgery, then it should work again if he focuses more on detail and less on time. But that is the issue with mechanics: They have schedules to be met. That's the main reason I chose no...

Re: 65 Gas Tank Removal

I agree there. The '65 should not be all that different from '68. In fact, I'd think it may be a tad easier, because the '65 axle housing isn't quite so massive as the '66–9 housings.

Re: brake fluid compatibility

As an additional admonition but not meant to be abusive (so please don't infer it as such), you really cannot cut corners where brakes are concerned. Get the overhaul kit, or an already-rebuilt replacement M/C, whichever costs less. In my 35 years as a gearhead (mostly hobby, not for a living, excep...

Re: 65 Gas Tank Removal

Wait... the vehicle, meaning the 'vert, or a vehicle, meaning something other than the 'vert? Sorry for my confusion; so you have a 4-post lift, meaning a drive-on lift, available? Then the job should not have all that much in complications. If the 'vert is on that lift now, then get on with it! If ...

Re: 65 Gas Tank Removal

Well, I do have to admit that my situation is different, as I have access to a facility with lifts. Most people don't have that luxury, unless they're personal friends with someone who has a lift. :| That is really the best, safest way to lift the car high enough to remove the tank. The jack points ...

Re: 1963 OEM Sway Bar Bushings

Oh, putting in the new bushings was easy for me. The auto center also had a hydraulic press to install them. It was taking the control arms off and reinstalling them that was the scary part. The spring compressors I used attached to the outsides of the springs, and with the lack of clearance I had t...

Re: 1963 OEM Sway Bar Bushings

Right, I knew there was no chance in Hell for me to get my money back from RockAuto. It wasn't even worth telling them about it, because it had been two years between my buying them and my discovering they were the wrong lifters when I installed them. I just no longer use them unless I absolutely ha...

Re: What's your most IMPORTANT thing in your tool box?

Right–crow's foot! That's the term, completely slipped my mind! I remember how commonplace they were in part stores, but not recently. I had to get my one off E-Bay.

Re: 65 Gas Tank Removal

We talking a '65 in your case? Actually, you should not have to detach the shocks. You just need to get the tail end up a good two feet (at least) off the ground. Remove the filler pipe, disconnect the wiring and fuel lines at the sending unit, unbolt the straps, and the tank should slide out. But o...

Re: What's your most IMPORTANT thing in your tool box?

No, it's just a wrench head of open-jaw configuration, with a square hole in the bottom to attach a ratchet. I remembered seeing them in part stores many years ago–sold either individually or in sets–and not being able to fathom what use they could serve that sockets could not. Then, when I finally ...

Re: Road Trip Vintage Finds

I sure hope you're not thinking of putting one of those 1970s sunroofs in Frankenstein! Fear not, that is never going to happen. That's what 'verts are for. Honestly, I'm rather surprised that moon-roof job survived the recent storm system that went through there. Those are just not meant for hail-...
