Re: 1959 rear brake hose -- need source

If you don't need 100% originality, I would source a separate splitter from the weatherhead catalog. They make them with the bolt hole for mounting on the rear axle. Then find a brake hose with the correct ends and proper length and you are back in business. Your local NAPA can help you track down t...

Re: 62 - Total suspension rebuild and Disc brake conversion

Hard to tell from the pic, but it looks like you are supposed to reuse the outer metal sleeve from your original bushings. I remember some of the poly bushings require that.

Re: 64 with drum brakes rim options...

Siggy,

Your '64 has 5x5. If you got 4.75 you probably measured from one lug bolt to another - this isn't the right way to measure. The bolt circle is the theoretical circle that passes through all of the bolts - it's actually a bit larger than the distance from one lug bolt to another.

Re: 64 vert: problem putting top back up

Kevin, I would suspect the upper back panel limit switch (I might have the name wrong, it's been a while) - it's the round bodied switch with several wires coming off it, located on the assembly that rotates the upper back panel (aka flapper panel). It sounds like this is not working properly, so th...

Re: front rotors with hub, grease seal, 1985 Town Car

I wouldn't transfer the bearings. Bearings aren't that expensive, but a failed bearing is very costly. I'd replace them while you have it all apart.

I'm sure you can get all of these parts at a local NAPA.

Re: rear axle seals

Anth, You do need to remove the rear wheel bearings to fix the seal leak. You are correct, the bearings need to be pressed on. Look for an autmotive machine shop or a very well equipped auto parts store/machine shop. It's not (usually) a difficult or time consuming operation. You can save time and $...

Re: New kind of 61-64 front disc brake conversion kit on eBay

Hammer, I have a 14" rotor front kit in stock and ready to go. I have the version with 4 piston Brembo calipers in stock, or I can provide some REALLY large 6 piston Brembo calipers if you prefer. Please shoot me an email (john@gearheadengineer.com) or call 860-368-9632 for more information. - ...

Re: 1964 all windows inop fixed sort of

Joe, Often you can fix the original relay by opening it up and cleaning up the contacts. You can open it by carefully prying the metal tabs outward until the guts come out of the can. Not that there's anything wrong with a modern relay - pretty sure I did the same thing with mine over 10 years back....

Re: 1957 Premiere Front Disc Set Up

Are you sure the turning radius has been changed? I think those cars had a pretty large turning radius because of the fender design - the wheel can't pivot too far without making contact. Of course I only drove one once, and it was in about 1983 so my memory could be off.

Re: Proportioning valve - yes or no?

John, any thoughts on the lack of boost that LincolnLand reported? Perhaps they used a different dual master cylinder than you do? Probably a combination of a tired booster and the larger piston on the dual master cylinder. Unlike many other cars, the Lincoln boosters don't always fail completely i...

Re: Proportioning valve - yes or no?

BTW, I disagree with the quote you cited from the Studebaker web site. Proportioning valves have an effect under all conditions, not just panic stops. Otherwise they wouldn't be called PROPORTIONING valves. They would be called limiting valves or something like that. And weight transfer isn't the ON...

Re: Proportioning valve - yes or no?

Reijer, You don't need a proportioning valve if you stay with the stock four wheel drum brakes, even if/when you convert to a dual master cylinder. The factory engineers designed the wheel cylinder bore diameters to provide the appropriate front/rear brake balance. Disc/drum systems need a prop. val...

Wow - big difference! Nice work.

I like the grille treatment - I haven't seen one painted to match the body like that before. Very cool.

Re: Need front end what would you do?

When I got my '64, it had been fitted with a Kanter kit. I didn't do the work, so I don't know the details. But the PO looks to have swapped the ball joints, control arm bushings, and sway bar bushings. It's still working fairly well 12 years later (but I had it off the road for the first 4 years or...
